One of the traditional, and important, features of a club run, is that it is a Club run, where we should look after the members (or friends) of the Club (ie we knew George had punctured but was on his way).
Yes, the start was chaotic, as we set off in groups, with a plan, but couldn't communicate (although we tried) when the plan changed with the arrival of the person we were waiting for. This was unfortunate.
Another problem area, however, is when a bunch starts off. There is a tendency for some riders to leave without checking if everyone is ready, with the result that you have dribs and drabs going down the road and the front groups (the dribs) dont seem to look behind to see where the drabs are. This happened three times today at Larkhall, Ashgill and Kirkmuirhill.
Oh, and a fourth at Lanark when I went ahead after the caf stop as I specially wanted to get caught on the Hazelbank Hill
Im sure that we will (and should) return to the agreed two-group format from next week. Today was just a simple New Year club run, where we agreed at the start to keep together, within the spirit of joy and tidings of good will.
But you know, Rik, it was great for me to be able to report today that there I was, actually holding the wheels of Messrs Sutherland and Ramsay as the wind blew us along the A73 |
