Aileen mentioned that some of us may like to go down to Manchester to have a go on the track, as they have official taster sessions. Here is the link to see the details
http://www.nationalcyclingcentre.com/ride_the_track.html
but the following is a summary.
Ride The Track
Taster Sessions - An introductory session for beginners. You will be riding with up to 15 (14 for a schools session) other riders on the track at the same time, for one hours duration. You will be given a set of skills to learn by the coach and each rider will be provided with a bike and helmet. The Taster sessions are great fun and are one of the most popular track sessions provided, so whether you want to be the next Sir Chris Hoy or Victoria Pendleton, or just curious to see what its like to ride round a banked cycle track, this is the session for you. Bring some friends or family for an experience you will never forget.
How To Book A Public Track Taster Session
For public track taster session or spin session please check the timetable for a session that you are available for. Once you have chosen a suitable session please telephone reception on 0161 223 2244 to check availability and book. All sessions must be pre-booked and paid for in advance. All major credit cards and debit cards are accepted and will incur an 80p surcharge. Cheques made payable to "The Velodrome Trust" are also accepted with valid cheque guarantee card.

Wednesday 12:00 - 1:00pm
Thursday 8:00 - 9:00am
Thursday 12:00 - 1:00pm

Friday 12:00 - 1:00pm
Friday Family Taster 5:00 - 6:00pm
Friday Skills Improver 6:00 - 7:00pm
Saturday 5:00 - 6:00pm
Sunday 12:00 - 1:00pm
Sunday 5:00 - 6:00pm
I would be interested in having a go at this sometime in the next few months, if we can muster up a good bunch. If you are interested in principle, please post here and we can take it from there. It is likely that overnight accommodation near the velodrome would be involved, as well as shared transport.
See what you think.

Count me in for some track time Dennis.
If any of you guys haven't been on a velodrome, you have got to try it.
The lack of wind, the smooth boards, and the slick bikes, the sensation of speed there's nothing like it, and looking down from the top of the 47.5 degree banking and seeing riders 3 or 4 abreast passing beneath you is definitely something you don't see on the roads.
I was down a few years ago with an SCU organised weekend, the accommodation of choice was the Campanile hotel, easy to get to, and central for the track and the city center. |
