This runs a cracker! After everyone gets slotted into a car or van at the meeting place described by John, we drive along the new M74/M8 to Gourocks Western Ferry Terminal, 20 min Ferry crossing to Dunoon , cycle to Sandbank, over the Loch Tarsan road (yes, spelt with an S!), north to Newton (south of Strachur), south along fantastic wee road on the shore of Loch Fyne to Otter Ferry (great Caf stop at the Very Nice Oystercatcher Hotel), Tighnabruaich, Glendaruel, retrace to Dunoon. About 73 miles round trip, with uppy-doony roads and some great climbs and beautiful views. Not a heid-doon-from-the-start kind o run though. Be warned!
The route (excluding the car journey and ferry ride) is 73 miles long, with about 6800 feet of climbing or, looking at it another way, 6800 feet downhill
For all those who like a bargain. Although you can buy tickets on board the ferry, every cyclist ever to have crossed the high seas to Dunoon buys them at Pauls Food & Wine Newsagent on Shore St, Gourock (see Ferry Ticket sign that sticks out from above the door, just after John Street and just before the Coop, on A770, a few hundred yards before the road turns left through the main street of Gourock). As Glaswegians would say, Gourock is the place that sticks oot even more than Greenock. If you dont want to faff with the newsagent, you can pay about twice the price on the boat (and probably be lynched by your car passengers!)

Hope to see a big bunch going Dunoon the Watter!

Here are the mugshots. Two at the top of the 20% grade climb at the 12.5 mile mark, and one on the shores of Loch Fyne at the Oystercatcher restaurant.
At that point little did the happy fed faces know what awaited in the second half of the run...
