A grand total of 2 (two) {!} out this morning, George The Sportive King and yours truly.
Slab could be heard tutting from his shady poolside berth in Tenerife.
Damp, dreich descent into the valley and onwards to Overtown before we sampled the serried delights of Carluke, Yeildshields, Carnwath, Newbigging and then Biggar for the cafe stop.
Ever the athlete, The Sportive King succumbed to the siren call of an egg-brushed mince pie, moist, with carrot and onion. Not sure about his decision to send a pic of said pie to his spouse - such things should remain on tour, if you ask me....
More tutting from The Slab as he sipped sangria in his candy-striped deckchair.
Thoughts of a leisurely spin back via Lanark were banished when the calorific hit of the mince pie kicked in with all the ferocity of Lance Armstrong at his EPO-fuelled peak.
The wind plucked at ruddy cheeks as we descended The Braidwood (much more pleasant than the usual), but The Slab's secret, remote-controlled weapon lay in wait in the form of a shaven-legged assassin on Crossford Bridge.
Clad in blue on a sleek black Scott bike, he harried and humbled us for a sweat-soaked two-mile spell along the valley before lungs blew (mine) and we waved him off with a friendly V-sign.
It was about 55 miles and around 16 mph.
The Slab, sitting astride the spin bike in his air-conditioned beachside hotel gym, nodded quietly to himself. |
