Lost property - right calf and pair of lungs. Last seen on Braidwood Climb. If found return to poster!
3 Albertos out with the Bundy tonight. Jim was stong and ever, Paul looked comfortable. Least said about me the better. Still, a decent night considering the weather of late! _________________ Second place = best loser! |

I can't go out on Saturday, I forgot the wife's working. I'm working at the Mighty Well match on Sunday, but I could make the Club Run if we left early - can I be selfish and suggest 0900 at the Club House? _________________ Second place = best loser! |

Aye nice one Recon... wifes got a spin class indeed! I went to Newhouse and I was going to win, everybody knew it. Before I got to Newhouse both calves cramped up and try as I might to continue cycling with straight legs, I went out the back like.... well, like I normally do. I cut off at Holytown and through Coatbridge (well you don't want to do that in lycra in the dark). Jim, Keith and Scott were out too.
Any tips for cramping calves? _________________ Second place = best loser! |

Hi Derek,
Cramp is simply prolonged tightening of the muscles. Well tried and tested tips for avoiding cramp in the legs are:
1. Drink more (a lot more) than you think you need before, during and after the event.
2. Be sure your muscles are WELL used to the intensity they will meet in the event.
3. If all that fails, 'batter' the area with your hand a few times as soon as you feel cramp 'coming on' (and ignore the inevitable comments from the bunch!).
It's not advisable to carry out number 3 above whilst going through Coatbridge, in lycra, in the dark....
Good luck!

Thanks Dennis - I should drink more water (maybe less tea and coffee too!). I'll try that for next time. _________________ Second place = best loser! |

That's why a bunch of us just cut off at coopers garage Derek, we thought there was no point continuing on seeing as the winner was a foregone conclusion
Was gonna ask what the time was when you all got to the end. Not wanting to go all way round until there is still some light to get me home.
Dennis' advice is pretty spot on. You can get wee tabs(google 'nuun') to put in your water bottle that contain lots of electrolytes, which helps prevent cramping(it doesn't contain any carbs at all though). But if your fully hydrated before and used to the intensity you should be ok. The High5 4:1 stuff that Keith sells is an energy drink and also contains electrolytes.
It was the prolonged intensity that got me in that TLI race.
If you do get it on the bike, apart from the banging, try getting out of the saddle, putting a pedal at 6'o'clock and just stretch out the back of your calves, then do it with the other side. I occasionally do that when i'm out, don't know if it helps prevent or not but can't hurt!
Yea i saw Jim, he looked strong again tonight. We found Keith and Scott when going up the Lanark climb! |

Cheers Rambo, I did try and stretch it out I used to get cramp in my hamstrings playing football. I'll try an do a few stretches before the cramp sets in. I'll get that stuff from Keith too.
You could get right round and home before it's dark, although it was a sunny night tonight, so maybe on a dull night it would get dark earlier. You should do it anyway, the hardest section is Newmains to Newhouse... although I've never went up the Big Boy climb, so maybe that's harder. I'm too scared I get dropped - it's a long lonely road from Lanark to BarG!! _________________ Second place = best loser! |

Do you ever stretch when your not on the bike? Cycling can shorten your hamstrings because of the repetitive motion or whatever. Take a few mins after a ride to stretch your muscles out. Even try and do it for a few mins every day at some point.
Think i'll just wait a few weeks for the sunset to get a bit later, can't be bothered with lights on my handlebars anymore.
Big boy climb is probably more in your head than anything, its a few minutes of pain, then a couple of mins relief, and then some more pain getting onto the back of the mouse brae bunch again. You should defo try it at some point. But i understand the logic, when i got dropped there last year it was a lonely ride back |

The whole route last night back to Motherwell takes about 1:36 so your back to Hamilton just after 8:00 and theres plenty of light at that time, maybe just a back light if its not as bright as last week, but getting lighter all the time.
Paul, you made the Brae look easy last night, you said it was painful, but you looked like you were spinning easy, but your picture still looks like a turd..
Derek, just do it, best to get dropped trying, than never to try. Theres no short cut in a race and its only a few minutes of pain. The climb back to Braidwood is worse. Then just sit it.
There was sigh of relief when the word came thru to the front that you were off the back, we all stopped squabbling over who was going to be 2nd and started thinking about the win again..
Your going well but need to push thru to next level, up the Brae, oh I RiKeH get up there as well, the more that do it, bigger the bunch to hide in..
Cheers
