Another big turnout today, too many to count but there was at least eighteen at the clubhouse.

So we set off on a perfect winters day with the biggest bunch of the year but by the time we got to the end of Wellgate Street the bunch had fragmented with eight of us getting stuck behind a tanker and missing a turn of the lights. The front of the bunch meanwhile continued on its merry way and we didn't meet again tilll Stonehouse.

That must be some kind of record for splitting the bunch The sooner the Slab is back to impose some discipline the better. Smile

After that it wasn't too bad tiil Muirkirk when some at the front took advantage of the tailwind on the Muirkirk/Douglas road to ramp up the pace but not fast enough for Brian who decided on a solo breakaway (I'm sure the bunch would have caught him if they hadn't finally been forced to stop to regroup at Douglas Smile ). A brief stop at Happenden to fix Greg's mudguard during which Jocky happened along but he didn't stop ,probably worried he would be asked to fix another puncture, then we straggled on to the cafe.

Another good day out and if we keep these numbers up we'll soon be able to achieve the holy grail of a slow, medium and fast group out on the road.

I'm all for encouraging all abilities by riding in bunches of a similar pace but we can't ALL ride in a big bunch at the pace of the slowest rider. By the time we had left Muirkirk, the average speed was down to around 14.5 mph for the group. Sorry, but that's a bit too leisurely for me and I had never intended in riding the same way all the way round with the group.

i think yose have all got it wrong, winter riding is for riding 15 mphto 17mph,,as a group,i used to train like a madman when i was young, and ended up with colds chest infections ect.,then i learned how to ride in the winter, base miles, when it gets to end of january, then start speed work,as big jack used to say, flying in the winter, deed in the season,if youse want to hammer it,go with ek 10am bunch.realise other guys are trying to get into cycling, and will only be put off,if there getting blown off every week, how mainly so called albert fast guys, won a race last year, answer NONE.just my point of veiw,so not looking for a big debate, the last time i had an easy winter,i had my best season ever.

Smudger, I think you're getting mixed up with a different group of cyclists!! It was easy and nothing near to hard going pace. The point is that there are guys turning up for the first time or fairly new to cycling. If there are enough people there then some organisation is required to filter the larger bunch at some point so that they can ride at a pace that is closer to their own abilities.

brian im not getting at you,i know how you feel, when your fit,its hard to sit with the slower guys,i like good steady riding myself, its a hard one brian, its been the same with clubs for years,i know when i was going well,i would go back, and help guys who were struggling, and we always had a habble, with about 5 miles to the finish, and that would pull guys on,and if they popped,it meant they didnt have far to go,as i said brian its a hard one,i was the biggest half wheeler in the bunch,so maybe frying pan calling the kettle black, theres always going to be different levels.
