4 Albertos took part in this 70 mile Sportive, Alex B, George J, John C and James S.
An early start was required as the event kicked off at 8am in Peebles.
The opening few miles were fast as the Auchendinny boys were pushing a good steady pace, any remaining bunch was split up on the Mountbenger climb with everyone settling down to a nice tempo
The cold headwind continued over Top Swire climb and down to Ricks Tea Room for the first stop, some coffee cake and banter was enjoyed, afterwards the headwind got even stronger and colder over the Buccleuch moors and the Brothwick Brae climb to Roberton.
The next section saw a car clip Alexs arm, and some expert wheelhanging as a few riders tried to get onboard the Albert train, the car disappeared and the wheelhangers were dispatched with some power climbing from the slab as the group went over Ashkirk Heights and the wall, although on this climb several riders seemed to succumb to the mystery mechanicals often associated with a short sharp climb after a fast paced flat section.
The feed station at Etterick bridge was a welcome stop with drinks, fruit and macaroni pies.
Then it was straight onto the Witchy Knowe climb, one of the best climbs we have seen in a while, and a fast descent and a tailwind section from Yarrow to the Gordon Arms Hotel.
From here we were back on the familiar roads we started out on, with John C and James S setting a blistering pace back up the Mountbenger climb a long wait was required at the top.
Some wheeling about followed, and with everyone getting increasingly tired we set a reasonable pace for the finish with the help of Lynne from Aberdeen although she was probably going a bit faster that we would have.
2 miles from the finish Alex took cramp and stopped dead in the road, the brakes came on so fast we thought he had spotted a pound coin, with a bit of stretching he was good to go.
We finished as a group, like we had started, used the showers provided, and helped ourselves to the free after event grub.
A good day on the bike over some testing climbs with windy conditions, at an average of 15.2mpg.

For the avoidance of doubt, I'd just like to take great exception to Mr Skinner's shameful comments about my cramp in the last 3 miles yesterday - it was a 2 coin.
Great effort by everyone involved - James and John for setting the pace and helping get me round my longest-ever run and George gets the medal for bravery - despite frostbite in his toes which required him to pack tissues inside his shoes at the feeding station, he performed superbly.
The only down side was John dashing off home with his birthday cake without sharing it amongst the lads - Greedy Slab...... |

Sounds like a very hard day in the saddle well done to all and i do have to agree with James that it was a 1 coin cause if it were a 2 coin James would have beaten you to it Alex. |
