Thanks again for the very warm welcome from everyone to the Royal Albert CC.
Training has been going well since I started back into my winter training in November and with my new coach Jayne Ellis, I am starting to see the benefits of all the hours on the turbo and the tandem.
The Para-cycling squad spent a very productive 10 days training in Majorca in January where we were riding with our arms and legs out, a pleasant change to the snow and rain back home!
Based at Reads Hotel, Santa Maria, about 20km from Palma, the camp ran very smoothly and was ideally situated, with mountain climbs, rolling roads and flat terrain all close at hand and the spa facilities were an added bonus after a hard day in the saddle.
Since returning I have been back on the track with my long term pilot Ellen Hunter who I havent ridden with since May last year due to riding with other pilots over the year.
We are now in the build up to the World Track Championships taking place from 11th-13th March in Montichari, Lomb, Italy and this week is selection week to decide which of the 3 female pilots (Ellen Hunter, Helen Scott and a new pilot on the block, Fiona Duncan) rides with the Lora Turnham and myself.
The selection will be based on a combination of tests in the lab and on the tandem over 3 laps at 1km pace or 10 laps at pursuit pace with me trying out with both Ellen and Helen.
We all had our lab tests yesterday with me achieving PBs in both my max minute and my peak power, so I am really pleased with that side of things and next up is the 3 laps with Helen tomorrow and Ellen on Thursday!

Fantastic stuff, Aileen...but can you explain to us mere mortals - wot do max minute and peak power mean?
...wotever they are, I look forward to feeling the benefit of them on the tandem on the Club run tomorrow?

A very rough explanation of the max minute test and peak power are:
The max minute test is calculated from the average power over the last minute of a ramp test taking place in the lab were the resistance gradually increases over a period of around 12 minutes or until you cant pedal any longer. It is used to assess an athletes endurance capabilities.
Peak power is the maximum power you can produce over 6s from a seated start.
The trials went well with both Ellen and Helen and Helen was selected to ride with me at the World Track Championships in March with Fiona selected to ride with Lora.
We then had an intensive two week block of training in Newport where the emphasis was on speed.
Another couple of weeks of training back in Manchester before we head out to Italy on the 7th March with our first race, the 1km time trial taking place on the 11th and then the 3km pursuit taking place on the 13th. |

Thanks Aileen, but you didn't mention the power output you needed to get me round the Muirkirk circuit recently.
Surely this should be part of your output profile in the build-up to the Worlds next month?
I don't know, what's your coach thinking of...
